Commissioning REACT

Fully researched, cost effective, real world community based physical activity and behavioural maintenance programme

Background

The REACT programme combines positive health outcomes as well as cost effectiveness. REACT offers an evidence based pragmatic exercise, education and behavioural maintenance programme to be used within the community of older adults.

REACT was funded by the National Institute of Health Research, with the goal of being able to roll out groups across the country. REACT can provide extensive support to the increasing population of UK adults 65 and over in need of support to ensure they remain active and mobile well into older adulthood. This will allow them to maintain independence, benefit from maintained social interaction and the confidence to engage in other forms of physical activity available throughout the local area.

REACT is one of the few fully researched intervention programmes which can demonstrate value for money in terms of increased quality of life and savings across the NHS and personal social care.

Cost effectiveness

The cost effectiveness of REACT was evaluated by the Health Economics team at the University of Exeter. They found that

Not only did the REACT intervention deliver enhanced mobility, but it also proved to be cost effective means of delivering such health benefits. The average reduction in health care costs was £725 per person. It all begins with an idea. Thanks to the impact of increased activity amongst REACT participants, more cost savings are predicted in the long term.
